Healthy worms can eat about half their weight in food per day, but it takes time to get things moving. Depending on the size of your compost bin, what you put in it, and how many worms are in your colony, it can take from 2 weeks to 3 months to get your first batch of vermicompost. Do not feed worms cat and dog excrement, citrus, onion, meat, or dairy products.These are some all-time favorite worm foods: Toss in food scraps, fine yard waste, and some paper products (no meat or dairy products, and easy on citrus peels and onion).
